When does a new worker need a baseline hearing test?
The baseline hearing test is the starting point for all workplace hearing compliance. Get this right and everything else follows. Here's exactly when it's required and what to do if you've missed the window.
What is a baseline hearing test?
A baseline test measures a worker's current hearing ability at the start of their time in a noisy role. It creates a reference point that all future tests are compared against — so if hearing changes over time, you'll know when it happened and by how much. Without a baseline, monitoring tests have nothing to compare to.
The 3-month rule
Under Clause 58, a baseline test must be conducted within 3 months of a worker commencing work in a role involving hazardous noise exposure. This applies to:
- New employees starting in a noisy role
- Existing employees moving into a new role with noise exposure
- Labour hire workers placed into noisy client environments — the agency carries this obligation

What if you've already missed the 3-month window?
Arrange testing now. The obligation doesn't expire — a late baseline is far better than no baseline at all. Having a current record protects both the worker and your business going forward.
Important: the 14-hour rest period
Testing should be conducted after at least 14 hours away from hazardous noise.
Noise exposure can cause temporary hearing changes that resolve after rest. Testing too soon after a noisy shift may produce a result that doesn't reflect a worker's true baseline. For workers already in the role, this means scheduling first thing in the morning, or after a weekend off.
What about workers who've never had a baseline test?
If you have existing workers in noisy roles with no baseline on record, arrange testing as soon as practicable. There's no grace period — if workers are currently in noisy roles without a baseline, it should be organised promptly.
